III Generations of Experience

Grant Sr., or “J Grant” as he was called, began adulthood as an army private in a combat engineer group serving in France in World War I. After the war, he was certified to teach and did so in a rural one-room schoolhouse. In the mid 1930’s, he began to farm cotton and build homes locally. In 1948, his only son, Grant Jr., became part of his construction business, and father and son were full-time builders. At that time, as brick masons and carpenters, they built the complete project. J. Grant worked in the business until his retirement in the 1960’s.

“Grant Jr.” entered the family construction business in 1948. He served in the army as the battalion motor sergeant during the Korean conflict. When he finished his tour, he returned to the family business. Times were changing in the industry as the State Board of General Contractors began to require builders to be licensed. Grant Jr. was licensed in 1958 (#3058) and built residential, commercial and industrial projects. He received his NC plumbing license in 1974. He built hundreds of projects in his career. In 1987, his son “Jim” joined him and they worked full-time together until 1991.

“Jim” earned a degree in Civil Engineering Technology in 1987. The same year he was licensed as a General Contractor and returned to the family business. During a two-year period, Jim was a part-time instructor at two community colleges, teaching construction related classes. Between 1987 and 1991, Jim, he became multi-trade licensed: General, Electrical, Mechanical, and Plumbing. Since 1991, Jim, as full owner of Duncan Construction Company, Inc., has carried on the values of excellence, integrity, and craftsmanship taught to him by his father and grandfather.
